Benedict Cumberbatch will be the protagonist in Showtime’s upcoming historical series, “Melrose”. This feature will also be produced by the actor, who has played the titular character in the new “Sherlock”.

It would seem that Benedict Cumberbatch has a knack for playing iconic British characters. Indeed, after portraying Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s production of the sleuth, and Alan Turing in “The Imitation Game”, the thespian will take the mantle of Patrick Melrose in a new Showtime serial titled after the protagonist’s surname. Benedict Cumberbatch will also executive produce.
A historical series showing the dark side of aristocracy
The story that will be told in “Melrose” is one that deals with deep emotional trauma. The main character, who is based on Edward St Aubyn, the original author, will be one that illustrates the depraved lives led by the British aristocracy. According to Deadline, Showtime will shape it as a five episode serial with the “Doctor Strange” actor as the lead.

The screenwriter that has adapted “Melrose”
The penning of the screenplay will be made by David Nicholls, who has previously worked on “Far from the Madding Crowd”. According to Benedict Cumberbatch, the adaptations by the screenwriter for Showtime are “extraordinary”. Nicholls seems to be content with the casting as well; Deadline has indicated that he considers Benedict Cumberbatch to be the perfect Patrick Melrose.
The other executive producers and the shooting schedule
There is currently no director listed for the project, but it has been said that shooting will begin in August, and will be take place in the South of France, London, and New York. Other executive producers that are working on this Showtime feature will be Michael Jackson and Rachael Horovitz.
