The film market in China has become a valuable source of income for many foreign filmmakers and production companies in the US and elsewhere. The main issue as to the acceptance of new productions is the country’s censorship rules.

It is common knowledge that China’s political regime imposes certain restrictions on the country’s film market. Foreign filmmakers therefore have to find ways to circumvent these restrictions so as to share their work with the Chinese and potentially hit the jackpot whilst doing it.

Cultural differences between countries have always been one of the world’s biggest issues as far as efficient communication is concerned. What happens when such differences affects the importation of new productions onto the Chinese film market? Django Unchained’s pulling from the cinemas in China seemed to suggest that crude violence and opposition against the government was a no-no.

However, the film’s reinstatement a month later with some minor alterations (three minutes worth of scenes of torture and nudity were censored) has shown that the rules of censorship could be quite arbitrary. According to Pen Kang, a researcher at the Hong Kong Baptist University of Film the successful movies on China’s film market are mostly Hollywood blockbusters. This was recently proved by Disney/Marvel’s Iron Man 3.

There are however certain exceptions. Cloud Atlas is the most recent one. Despite being a very successful blockbuster worldwide, Chinese officials cut 40 minutes of the 172 minutes film rendering its moral quasi-obsolete. Eric Garandeau, director of France's National Cinema Centre (CNC), says that for a film to be awarded a place on China’s film market, it must steer clear from the “three Ts’”. In his own words, "You mustn't include the 'three Ts' -- Tibet, Tiananmen and Taiwan -- and you can't have any story that involves ghosts and sex."
