After receiving worldwide critical acclaim, it seems Quentin Tarantino’s film starring Jamie Foxx, Django Unchained, has hit a bit of a rough patch. Screening rights for this movie have been revoked in Chinese cinemas. The film is said to go against Chinese censorship rules.

Django Unchained despite being revered as one of Quentin Tarantino’s best movies is having a hard time being accepted by Chinese officials. Reports state that the film is not adapted to what the Chinese government considers as acceptable. A viewer states that a screening of the film was stopped after a minute.

It is a well-known fact that China is very strict when it comes to censorship of films and media in general. The country’s culture has a very different approach when it comes to sexual material and especially political views and opinions. Django Unchained does not abscond from this rule. Reports have stated that Quentin Tarantino has agreed to alter some scenes of the film to make it more adaptable to Chinese standards. One scene which will definitely be cut out is the one with Jamie Foxx hanging upside down and naked.

It seems Django can’t be unchained in China

Zhang Miao, director of Sony Pictures’ Chinese branch, said that Django Unchained will be back in Chinese cinemas with some slight adjustments” that “will not affect the basic quality of the film”. The latter also said that Quentin Tarantino considers these alterations as a progress and not as a drawback. It is indeed necessary for film directors to be able to adapt their work to different cultures nowadays.

Censorship rules in China are quite arbitrary. Reasons are seldom given why such and such scenes are cut. However, most of the time, scenes involving contemporary politics and sexual intercourse are the ones to get cut. Django Unchained is, of course, filled with these scenes. Quentin Tarantino will surely have a challenging time to keep the original story intact whilst reducing these aspects of the film.
